ok i ask this question because i play both and play bass in a band. most people think they are good or can play bass by rocking a few single notes so to me this is why they claim it to be easier to learn. guitar you begin with chords generally leaving it a little more awkward to start. but what i have noticed when i got good at guitar and became pretty good on bass ,then to progress from there became very difficult .
i can play with 4 fingers picking on bass and i have to say it was so much harder to do that than using a pick on guitar. also to move as fast as a guitar on a bass fretboard is very hard because the frets are bigger and the strings are more spaced apart. so guitar with small frets and close strings allow for a lot more speed. good bass player makes the band so much tighter and it is the gel of the sound and holds the drummer in rhytm also. that being said a bassist must have flawless rhytm or the band will sound terrible ,meaning more skill needed on bass (guitar can afford to be mess up at times).
so what i am trying to say is to be really good at any instrument you have to work very hard. and from playing both i feel they all difficult and the bass easier to play sterotype comes from people who dont even play. so stop claiming your good on bass bacause you can play a few notes. i thought the bass was easier when i started but soon woke up. what is your opinions.

I just bought a new 21 fret electric guitar. I want to learn the basics (before getting expensive lessons) to see if it is for me. What is the best dvd for me to buy, what can you recommend? For ultimate beginner novice basics!
Cheers my dears!

I seem to be sticking to the top four frets. I have been learning for about a year now and I know all the major chords. What is my next step so I can play the entire fretboard?

I’ve been playing guitar for about 6 years, and am entirely self-taught. I’m a pretty darn good player, but my lack of knowledge of the notes on the fretboard is tremendously holding me back, especially when improvising. I know lots of scales, and can play them all over the neck, but they’re just “patterns” to me without knowing the notes. Can anyone advise me of what is the best way to go about learning/memorizing the notes? String by string? Fret by fret? Sitting and staring at a fretboard drawing with all the notes on it doesn’t seem to soak it in… Thanks so much!

in acoustic, since the 12th fretted sixth string E is the same as the 2nd fret 4th string E, and on and on for the rest of the notes, before and after.
since the high notes can be found in low strings, how do you then use that to master the guitar, in playing chords easier, and all the rest of the stuff, that will help you learn faster

There is probably not one person who has not heard of the video game “Guitar Hero”. You could not walk through any electronics store or Best Buy without seeing customer’s young and old, standing in front of monitors with a plastic guitar strapped around them strumming to Pat Benatar’s “Hit Me with Your Best Shot.” I should know, I was one of those customers! The guitar is among the most popular musical instruments around. Because of how versatile the guitar is, it is a popular instrument to learn how to play. The guitar can play any kind of music that suits your interest whether it is rock, country or jazz or any other style of music. You may be interested in playing your favorite songs or maybe you are a buddin (more…)

I am reasonably proficient on my acoustic, but I have started to approach the theory side of the guitar. I’m starting with scales. How long does it take to learn every major and minor scale, including variations on different places on the fretboard?
Also, once I’ve mastered them, where next? My style is acoustic fingerpicking with vocals if that helps.
Thanks

mark it with small pieces of white medical tape with the key on each one. As you remember them, take them off. Medical tape because it shouldn’t leave any residue on your guitar neck.
Same works for a piano…
